Broadneck High School proudly announces the hiring of Mr. Devin Gardner as head coach of our golf program. Coach Gardner is a 2008 graduate of Kent Island high school, and a 2014 graduate of Salisbury University.
During his time in both high school and college he had a very successful career playing baseball. His list of both, team and individual accolades include numerous all county, all region, and all state selections, as well as a team state championship in 2008 while at Kent Island high school. After his playing days were complete, Coach Gardner began is coaching career at Salisbury University serving as the team’s pitching coach. He moved to the high school ranks in 2014, coaching at J.M. Bennett high school, and arrived at Broadneck high school in 2016 where he still serves as an assistant on our outstanding baseball coaching staff. He is also the Physical Education teacher at Mills-Parole in Annapolis.
After his baseball career ended, he looked for a sport that would allow him to use some of the things learned while playing baseball for twenty-two years. He found this in golf and it immediately became the sport he most enjoyed. For the past seven years he has been an avid golfer, never missing a chance to both play and learn more about the fantastic sport. Coach Gardner is excited for this journey stating, “The opportunity to put two of my favorite things together, coaching and golf, is very exciting. I could not imagine a more significant thing to do with my life. The ability and privilege to coach student athletes has and will always be something that I cherish. My goals for the program are to first and foremost, foster a program culture that values more than just winning. Our program will consitently demonstrate sportsmanship, accountability, humility and respect. I am looking forward to this great opportunity and I am ready to get the season rolling.”
Athletic Director Kevin Necessary states, “We are fortunate to be adding such a high-quality coach and person to the Bruin coaching staff. Mr. Gardner is committed to continuing the great tradition of our golf program for many years to come.”
Coach Gardner is replacing Mr. Kevin Peterson as he is stepping back due to both professional and personal commitments. Fortunately, Coach Peterson is staying involved in the program as assistant coach. He did an outstanding job as our head coach, keeping Broadneck amongst the top teams in the county and state. We will feel lucky to have him continue to serve a large role in our program.
